Summary: Collection consists mainly of the various business records of the Spitz Jewelry Store of Santa Fe, N.M. The business was founded in 1881 and closed in 1974. The business was started by Solomon Spitz and then carried on by his son, Bernard. Initially the business was involved in the manufacture, importation, and sale of jewelry. There is a significant collection of letters from the Fred Harvey Enterprise ordering jewelry over the period 1905-1921. The family was involved in financial and real estate ventures through-out the state in addition to the jewelry business. May Spitz, daughter of Solomon, was primarily involved in local Santa Fe real estate. Additional business papers generated by Martin Gardesky and Florence Spitz Gardesky are also included in the collection. The collection contains numerous personal papers. The collection includes letters on an oil discovery near Clovis, N.M., and Gorham Co. and Reed & Barton Silversmiths related to the silver service for the U.S.S. New Mexico. A number of records are included involving the import of filigree jewelry from Italy during the 1905-1920 period. Prominent local names include G.W. Bond, Alex and Gerson Gusdorf, Charles Ilfeld & Co., Phelps Dodge Co., Edgar L. Hewett, and Albert Fall. Personal records include tax returns, investment records and miscellaneous personal material. The majority of the collection is arranged chronologically with letters from selected people, businesses, and topics collected separately.
